We are out of balance.
As nations or in our personal lives by forgetting how much of an impact we have on those around us. From how we create and sort our garbage to the type of chemicals we use to grow our plants, it has a major impact on our community. Even our noise level or the parking of cars affects our neighbors. We even fail to greet the people we see each day with a smile and a kind word.
Those same attitudes get carried out by the businesses we work for and even the countries we live in. Protocols become planned propaganda or items that have been individually negotiated before formative negotiations can be scheduled. Even body language and little nuances can be construed as insult by those who are looking for excuses.
We might not all share the same social graces but we should appreciate when an effort is made by others to invite us and open a dialogs. We should not always have to schedule time to socialize in our personal lives, nor should our nations need to have an excuse to sit and talk about how our countries can communicate and cooperate in various fields.
We don't have to agree but we can at least respect the culture and structure of other people. How we each, developed might be different but we can still learn from the lessons of others in their historic struggles. As individual or as nations we still have to realize our actions internally have an impact on other nations and globally. We cannot live and act in isolation.
From trade to our impact on the environment, we have to be considerate of others.
We managed to live through a Cold War and the fall of the Iron Curtain. We kept communications open with those perceived as enemies. How is it that we now apply useless sanctions and refuse to negotiate with those we most need to talk to? Not every nation will become our most trusted alley, but we don't have to make those who are suspicious of us feel they are left with no choice but to destroy us to assure their own survival.
Perhaps it is time to make debate a requirement in schools right next to read, mathematics and science. The science of communication (without hostilities)
We are out of balance.
